My Life Needed a Reset
My Life Needed a Reset
How Sound Helped Me Stop Living Entirely in My Head and Find Myself Again
Approximately an 11-minute read
A lot of us want to change our lives.
That’s probably why the self-help and self-improvement industry is so big.
At the same time, the wealth of information can feel very overwhelming.
I’ve been a student of the self-improvement world for the better part of two decades, and I’ve given up many times because a lot of the information can be really conflicting. And when you’re trying what people say works for them and it doesn’t work for you, it can be incredibly discouraging.
But what never changed throughout those 20 years was my belief that I can—and deserve to—be living a better life.
Reset rituals are how I’ve been able to distil that information down and actually start seeing changes in my life.
In this post:
Don't sleep on sound as self-improvement
What chanting does for your body
Why chanting works better than meditation
The necessary pause before life changes
Why you need to reset every day
Your frequency is more than just noises
Brainwashing myself into a new reality...and it's working
The frequency of every part of yourself
From external trust to self-trust
It's ok to get support to shift your vibration
You can’t create a new life from the same frequency

Tune into the feeling you would prefer

Don't sleep on sound as self-improvement
Something I never explored until the more recent five years of my 20-year journey was healing through sound.
I’ve always been interested in music.
I’ve gravitated towards it ever since I was a child, and I’ve always found it very healing.
The Backstreet Boys heal my soul every time I listen to them.
I’ve also been a musician ever since someone handed me a guitar when I was a child.
But I never really considered the healing properties of sound until the past five years.
I don’t know why I never considered using sound for healing. I guess it just wasn’t part of my life journey yet.
I heard far more people talking about the power of meditation than I did people talking about the power of chanting.
Now, I am a full-blown advocate for the power of chanting.
And that’s not only because I’m a sound therapy practitioner.
It’s because I have firsthand felt the shift in vibration it creates for me.

Everything is a vibration
A little bit of science for you: everything is a vibration.
Everything is vibrating.
The Earth is vibrating.
The electricity in your walls is vibrating.
When you drive in a car, that creates a vibration.
Your body is made up of atoms, which are vibrating.
Everything is a vibration.
You can also look at this in terms of your emotions.
When you feel good, you feel a certain way. That's a vibration.
When you feel badly, you feel a different way. Another vibration.
Different vibrations = different frequencies.
You know when you listen to someone playing the piano and two notes don’t sound good together?
Or when you hear a beginner playing versus an expert, whose fingers sound like butter gliding across the keys?
Dissonance and melody create different effects in the body.
And sound is one way we can intentionally work with that.

What chanting does for your body
Sometimes I feel into my body and I feel kind of meh.
Kind of blah.
Stale, stagnant or maybe just neutral.
When I chant for five minutes—even if I chant for only two minutes—it doesn’t have to be a big thing, I feel a shift in how I feel.
I've recently started chanting the sound most people know:
OM.
And I feel my energy lift.
I feel more hopeful.
More excited.
Happier.
Everything feels more possible.
Yeah, it feels weird at first.
You don’t want to bother anybody around you, and you might not want to be perceived as weird.
But now that chanting has become normal for me, I don’t care if anybody can hear or see me.
How I feel matters more than what someone else thinks about me.
And chanting is the fastest and easiest way to shift my frequency from dis-ease, and emotions I don't prefer, to ease, peace and wholeness.
Your voice is a healing tool
One thing I learned during my sound therapy training is that everybody has a unique voice.
Have you ever thought about that?
Everybody’s voice is unique, just as unique as their appearance.
What I learned is that your particular voice is healing for you.
We were born with this tool. This gift.
Why not use it?
Use it if you’ve got it.
When you chant, your vocal cords vibrate.
Even speaking creates vibration through your vocal cords.
When you’re sitting there chanting, maybe with your eyes closed, it becomes a meditative state.
It’s very grounding.
Very clearing.
Very healing.

Why chanting works better than meditation
I would argue that I can get more benefit from five minutes of chanting than I can from five minutes of meditation—especially as someone with an overactive mind.
I can’t shut my brain off.
Even during a guided meditation, it can be hard to pull my focus back.
But when I’m chanting, I’m focused on breathing full breaths and on the sound I’m chanting.
That really helps quiet my brain.
It gives my mind something to focus on while the sound and vibration help me settle.
The necessary pause before life changes
My life kind of sucks.
And I feel like I needed to go through this low point in my life in order to tweak, recommit and find resetting again.
I first started resetting with the moon.
I called it Manifesting with the Moon.
I would do these practices, receive downloads and harness the energy of the moon to create shifts in my life.
And it worked.
At the time, I was happy in my life, so I was kind of passive with resetting.
I would do it at the new moon and the full moon, and then go about living my life.
And that’s fine. I think we need to live our lives.
But now with my life sucking, I've turned my commitment to resetting up to eleven.
Because what creates our reality is not only what we’re trying to manifest.
It’s our beliefs.
Our actions.
Our habits.
And we need to come back to them, keep them front of mind, if we're trying to actively change our life.
Why you need to reset every day
I reset every single day so I can set the foundation for the rest of my day and remind myself what I’m working towards.
It needs to be front of mind.
Vision boards didn’t work for me because my goals were external.
They weren’t necessarily things I actually wanted.
They were things like status symbols that I thought I was supposed to want because of society.
Now, I reset with achievable and attainable goals.
Things I actually want.
I tune into myself and ask what I actually want, where I actually want to go and what I actually want to work towards.
I’m shifting my beliefs.
I’m shifting my habits.
I’m shifting my actions.
And the action I take every day is resetting.
Call it whatever you want.
Call it a ritual.
Call it a practice.
Call it an exercise.
Call it an experience.
I call it a reset because I’m hitting the reset button on my life.
Because I can’t keep living the way I was.
Somehow, I have this belief that everything is possible and that everything good is going to happen, even though I have not had that as a constant in my life.
Three easy daily resets
I do a morning practice.
I do a midday check-in.
And another reset before bed.
That means I’m constantly coming back to my new beliefs.
Resetting is a new action.
It’s a new habit.
And it’s creating different actions in my life too.
I’m showing up more for my life.
I’m showing up more for myself.
I’m showing up more for my business.
I’m showing up more in the community.
I’m doing the things I want to do for my life.
That’s what resetting does for me.
And I amplify those resets through sound.

Your frequency is more than just noises
Every morning, my reset starts with chanting for five minutes.
But it’s not only about sound.
It’s about shifting my vibration.
Sound vibrates, but it’s not only the things that make noise that affect your vibration.
There’s also your emotional frequency and your mental frequency.
Part of my morning reset is tuning to the frequency of gratitude.
Not gaslighting myself into feeling grateful for specific things, but connecting with the general frequency of gratitude.
That’s where I’m headed.
I’m shifting from a frequency, upbringing and life of complaining, thinking people should behave a certain way, anger, conforming and settling.
I’m shifting into what I prefer:
Abundance.
Gratitude.
Freedom.
Peace.
Love.
Those things have a frequency.
So I tune to those frequencies every morning.
Starting with chanting sets the tone for everything else.
Brainwashing myself into a new reality...and it's working
I also created what I call a brainwashing audio.
It’s a voice note from my future self.
I wrote and recorded it as if my future self were telling me the story of her life:
This is what my life is like now.
Things like:
I remember when things were hard in the beginning.
Look at how quickly everything turned around.
You speak from the feeling of already having achieved the thing.
I know that’s easier said than done because you don’t have it now.
My recording was actually very flat and monotone.
And now that I’ve been listening to it for a month—and most of it has come true, by the way—I think the monotone might have worked in my favour.
I’ve had opportunities come my way that I couldn’t even fathom were coming.
And it feels so good.
When you already have something, the intense emotion you imagined might not be there anymore.
My future self already has this stuff.
She’s like:
Yep. This is my life.
She’s telling the story because it’s what is.
Not what she hopes for.
It’s what she already has.
I listen to that voice note every morning and every night.

The frequency of every part of yourself
My morning reset also includes a meditation where I tune into every part of myself.
I believe part of why I didn’t like my life was because I was so disconnected from myself.
I didn’t necessarily know what the sensations in my body felt like.
I was living so much in my head.
So much in a state of worry.
So much in a state of needing to do the right thing, thinking about the right thing, wondering what the right thing was, and listening to other people’s advice about what I should do.
I didn’t really get to tune into myself.
Ever.
I was never encouraged to do that.
I originally called this meditation the Inner Sound Check.
Now I call it Sovereign Self, because I'm not outsourcing. I am powerful beyond measure just as I am.
I tune into every layer of myself.
I had an out-of-body experience, which I will talk about in another post, where my body multiplied into six.
When I looked into that experience and sat with it, it made me realize that there are six layers of our being.
And I had been going through life using only my mind.
Now I tune into all six layers every day.
From external trust to self-trust
Tuning into all six layers shifts my vibration because I’m going from living one way to living another way.
I’m going from external trust to self-trust.
From external validation to self-validation.
From being outside-led to being sovereign-led.
Self-led.
All of these things shift your vibration.
They change how you show up in your life and where you make your choices from.
It's ok to get support to shift your vibration
During my midday check-in, I use tuning forks along with chanting.
I don’t always have the energy to do a meditation.
Sound is such an easy way to tune your frequency without needing to do very much.
With a self-guided meditation, I feel like you’re on.
You’re doing.
With a sound meditation, you can be fully relaxed.
Most of the time, people in my sound healing sessions fall asleep.
I have a low OM tuning fork that I used for five minutes one day when I was feeling panicky.
After five minutes, the panicky feeling had gone away.
I think it’s because the sound settles and grounds me.
It shifts my frequency out of the panic.
And we’re not trying to push our emotions down or ignore them.
We want to allow them to be there.
Then we can shift our frequency.
It’s like acknowledging our human experience and then shifting into something we prefer.

You can’t create a new life from the same frequency
It isn’t only about sound.
It’s vibration and frequency.
Everything on this planet is vibration and frequency.
Think of a radio.
When you tune it to one channel, you get one kind of music.
When you tune it to another channel, you get another kind of music.
You can’t live your life from a state of complaining, feeling like everyone is out to get you and feeling like your life sucks—and keep doing the same things—while expecting to get a different life and a different result.
You have to shift your frequency.
You have to shift your vibration.
This is how I combine sound with my resets.
And so far, it’s working.
So far, I’m getting a new life.
So far, I’m seeing excellent results.
And I’m going to keep doing it because I deserve it.
Try this five-minute sound reset
It’s really easy to try this yourself, especially when you use your own voice.
You have this healing tool.
You have this healing modality.
If you’re a fan of music, I highly recommend trying it.
Sit comfortably and breathe normally for a moment.
Take a full breath in.
As you breathe out, vocalize:
OM.
When you reach the M, close your mouth.
You may feel your lips vibrating and feel the sound settling in your body.
Continue the sound throughout your exhale.
Then take another deep breath in and vocalize OM again as you exhale.
Try it for five minutes and see how you feel.
It’s so simple.
You can do this a few times a day and intentionally tune into a frequency you prefer.
Tune into the feeling you would prefer
If you feel trapped in your life, try tuning into freedom.
If you notice yourself complaining, try tuning into happiness or gratitude.
Tap into a feeling you would rather feel.
Find the opposite of how you normally feel—or how you currently feel—and connect with how you would prefer to feel.
These are ways you can begin shifting your life.
I’m also working on a script guide so you can make your own morning audio and see how it transforms your life too.
Let me know if you’ve tried these practices and if they work for you.
I would love to have people to reset with.
You can follow my journey here.
You can follow along on social media.
And let me know if you’re along for the ride with me.
Things are always better with friends.
